DIVISIONS Food, Packaging & Materials Division : Packaging Area

Packaging area, in the framework of FPM Division, represents the most complete and innovative structure for advanced investigation of shelf life. With the term “Shelf Life” (durability, time to market, etc.) the period of time which, under defined circumstances, corresponds to a tolerable decay of the quality of a packaged product,is intended.

The laboratory, recently opened, is equipped with the most updated instrumentations for physico-chemical, microbiological and sensorial analyses in order to operate adequately for the shelf life of all varieties of foods. Packaging area operates within the Outstanding Centre for Shelf Life Studies, originated from the cooperation between DiSTAM (University of Milan) and CSI. Such cooperation is a continuous one and aims to create synergies between University and Industry, i.e. between research and its industrial implementation. It intends to offer a highly qualified service in a world where often the innovation of packaging systems relies on tests characterized by a poor scientific base.
Packaging area places now at disposal of food and packaging industries:

  • Protocols for the evaluation of the qualitative decay of foods (hygienic, sensorial, nutritional)
  • Innovative procedures of ASLT (Accelerated Shelf Life Test) to reduce the testing times and increase the predictive effectiveness of the experimental results
  • Algorithms and mathematical models for the forecast of shelf life, based on the relevant physico-chemical and environmental variables, experimentations and researches
  • Validation of reference standards, certified for the self-control of food packages,
  • Methodologies to carry out “abuse tests” to assay the preservation limits of packaged perishable products
  • Optimization and design of food/package systems
  • Experimentations and researches
