DIVISIONS European Directives Division : 96/88/CE Directive (MED)

Directive 96/98/CE ( MED) – Maritime equipments

MED Directive concerns all the equipments and the materials intended to be used onboard the maritime ships (war ships excluded). It is the case either of radiocommunication and navigation equipments or of fitting out materials or of equipments against fires.

The technical regulations applicable to to maritime products are very complex as they take into account three normative Bodies: SOLAS convention, International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolutions and EN European norms.
As the Directive 96/98/CE includes also the initial type tests for the single products and as the technical rules are continuously in evolution, today three updatings have been already issued and the reference Directive for the technical rules is the 2002/75/CE one.

The certification of maritime products carried out by the notified Body applies the 93/68/CE Directive forms which provides for initial type tests (form B), inspective visits for every batch of product (form F) if the manufacturer does not dispose of any internal Quality system, periodic inspective visits (forms D or E) if the manufacturer has an approved production control system and is an authorized manufacturer or reseller.
